Luxury Fashion & Social Media

The words Luxury and Exclusivity are often considered synonymous. As luxury brands increasingly feel more pressure to conquer marketing online, how do they remain desirable in a medium that is open to the masses?

It is widely perceived that the web isn’t a luxury market and brands face the dilemma of either embracing social media or being left behind. As people spend more money online, in order to make profit luxury brands must find a way to engage these consumers.

The biggest challenge that faces luxury brands when approaching social media is that luxury implies exclusivity and therefore the product shouldn’t be accessible to everyone. Social media sites make it more challenging to selectively choose whom to interact with. Furthermore, some brands are hesitant to try new marketing techniques, which might be risky to their established brand image. If done incorrectly, they risk ruining their brand reputation and diminishing the perception of affluence.

The solution for the luxury sector is to embrace social media: Just as product can be desirable and exclusive, so websites can be.

Burberry is a fantastic example of a brand who have created their own online community. Rather than shun Facebook and Twitter because of their mass audiences, Burberry has embraced them.

Burberry’s Facebook page boasts over 7 million followers, and the face of the brand’s new ‘Body’ fragrance (and fashion ‘It girl’ of the moment) Rosie Huntington-Whitely appears in a short video to thank fans for the achievement. The page introduces new content, which keep the consumer engaged in the brand and lusting for the product. Whilst remaining exclusive, the brand offers a mass audience the chance to be part of their brand in the same way that a new fragrance does.

Their Twitter page similarly offers snapshots into the world of Burberry with Creative Director Christopher Bailey even taking over the account during Fashion Weeks.

But significantly on top of this, Burberry launched its ArtOfTheTrench internet community, allowing those who sign up to comment, favourite and – if their image is selected - even share their own real-life shots of them in the famous Burberry trench. Bailey even commissioned The Sartorialist’s Scott Schuman to launch the site in a tactical move which would appeal to young internet-savvy fashion fans. Through this site and the younger audience appeal of a renowned fashion blogger, Burberry give their users another outlet that is more refined than the larger social media sites open to the masses.

Other luxury brands have also embraced social media to fantastic effect. Jimmy Choo started an Internet frenzy by launching a “Shoe Treasure Hunt” in London via location-based social networking website Foursquare, whilst Tiffany & Co. and Chanel were quick to realize the potential of iPhone applications which interact with Facebook.

Whilst some hold back attempting to guard their brand identity of desirability, most luxury brands are increasingly realising the need to focus on creating unique online experiences. Social media is a tool that any brand can ill afford not to be involved with. Acknowledging that exposing your brand to consumers through social networks is the only way to engage today’s customers consistently.

Dress Me Up!

Topshop's Oxford Circus never ceases to amaze me.

Throughout December, their 'Dress Me Up!' section plays hosts to an amazing selection of dresses donated by fashion’s elite. From a Burberry dress donated by Freida Pinto and Jourdan Dunn's stunning Herve Leger, to Peaches Geldoff's Dolce & Gabbanna and a dress designed and worn by Naomi Campbell; the idea is that you can go along and hire one of the stunning pieces for the evening for just £40! (All proceeds go to charity).

Burberry behind-the-scenes.

Update from previous post on Emma Watson's photoshoot for the new Burberry campaign. (Appropriate that the soundtrack is Razorlight since Watson has been linked to Johnny Borrell.)

Hermione's all grown up!

So Burberry has signed actress Emma Watson to be the face of their AW'09/'10 campaign. I can't help but think, it's about time!

Burberry picked the British actress to “reinforce the brand’s rich heritage” with the campaign being photographed by Mario Testino near the new Burberry HQ in London. Burberry have also made the decision to return to London Fashion Week instead of Milan.

The Creative Director of Burberry, Christopher Bailey, said:

“I wanted the images to represent both the rich history and the modernity of the Burberry brand whilst at the same time reflecting a quiet beauty, timelessness and strength that is particularly significant today... [Emma] was the obvious choice for this campaign who like the images she fronts, has a classic beauty a great character and a modern edge.”

I have been expecting this for a while and it makes sense that it is Burberry, after last October's shoot with Christopher Bailey and that famous feather dress. I am so jealous she got to wear that.

Rocky future for Aquascutum.

Aquascutum's entire workforce of 343 (mainly made up of their Corby factory workers), has just been put into consultation. The luxury British brand's Chief Executive Kim Winser departed a few weeks ago after years of consecutive losses.

Parent company Renown confirmed they have signed a "letter of intent" with their Chinese distributor YGM Trading, as a potential buyer of the business. Whether or not YGM Trading decide to pursue a bid of the company will effectively determine the continuation of the brand.

I would be really sad to see the brand dissolve, as speculation suggests. The London based clothing brand is 158 years old and I associate it's British roots in the same breath as Burberry or Pringle. I also particularly loved this season's 'kissing' campaign shot by Vogue favourite, Tim Walker:

"I've wanted to shoot Aquascutum for some time, so working on the spring/summer 2009 campaign has been great,"

"Michael Herz, Aquascutum's head of womenswear and design, and I... worked together on the concept of the group kiss. I hope it captures something of the romance, nostalgia and freshness of the brand."

Sam Riley in my paper.

My favourite new model, actor and singer Sam Riley (see my previous post) turned up in the TV supplement of the Scottish Mail on Sunday. Here he is dressed in Burberry for this photoshoot since he did the Burberry A/W '08 campaign.

My Burberry Mac

A couple of years back I bought a second hand Burberry Mac in a vintage store in Glasgow's West end called Watermelon for £30. I usually only find larger sized ones so when I saw this UK size 12 petite I had to have it despite being a UK 8 - I just convinced myself it kind of fitted. But 2 years down the line, I still hadn't worn it and was tempted to sell it on ebay.
Instead, I decided a few weeks back, to have it altered by a local seamstress who is fantastic and has fantastic prices to match (only £20 for this job). I asked for the hem line to be taken right up to update it and she took the whole thing in a few inches. And now I wear it all the time! (I have cut my face out this picture because I look miserable.)

The great thing about a Burberry mac is you know you are wearing a historic item of clothing (Check out the Burberry website to read all about the history of their iconic trench coat - so-called because it was originally worn by soldiers in trenches during the Boer War.) Also, I stupidly spilled my Pepsi Max all over it whilst waiting on a train and it just rolled right off: no mark or stain left what-so-ever.

New Burberry campaign

So it looks like the rock inspired Agyness Deyn adverts for Burberry have been replaced by a more romantic campaign to suit the new A/W 08/09 featuring Sam Riley and Rosie Huntington-Whiteley.

Despite my rock and roll tendencies, I am really happy about the change for 2 reasons:

I'm not a big Agyness Detn fan. (However, when flicking through the latest 'Pop' magazine I came across the fab photoshoot of her falling through the air and thought it was amazing.)

Secondly, I heart Sam Riley! I have been a fan of his for quite a while.
Around 4 years ago, just after I had started at uni my flatmate and I decided to go see Pete Docherty's new band Babyshambles at a club in Dundee of little consequence to anyone except those who had ever been.
It was Babyshambles first tour so they hadn't built up a fanbase yet and most people attending were Libertines enthusiasts like myself. We turned up and went down the front for the supporting band '10,000 things'.
I ended up having a conversation with him when he was on-stage and then later on in the audience waiting for Babyshambles to come on. Great gig!

Then last year, Control - a film about Ian Curtis of Joy Division came out with Riley taking the leading role. 2 motivations for seeing the film as Joy Division are one of my favourite bands of all time and I had had conversations with Riley. The film was so gripping with, of course an amazing soundtrack and fantastic performances.

It seems Burberry's main man himself Christopher Bailey is also a major fan of Riley's: "When I saw him in Control, he just completely blew me away and it just felt like a perfect fit for Burberry and the mood of this campaign."
