The Rock star and the Fashionista

For decades there has been a distinct correlation between fashion icons and rock stars (think Jerry Hall & Mick Jagger). In more recent years, there seems to be a resurgence of the musician man-candy on the arm of our favourite style icons.

Here's my pick of our favourite trend-setting rock ‘n’ roll couples:

Kate Moss & Jamie Hince (of The Kills).Recently married Kate and Jamie couldn’t be more suited for one another. Kate has been romantically linked with a whole host of musicians over the years and lists Primal Scream singer Bobby Gillespie as one of her closest friends. Dueting with Primal Scream and starring in a White Stripes video have all added to her “indie” credentials (not to mention her relationship with Johnny Depp back in the day and the father of her daughter Lily is Dazed & Confused founding editor Jefferson Hack).

The supermodel’s previous tumultuous relationship with Pete Doherty seemed to put Kate’s head in a spin, but it looks like Kate has finally found “the one”.

Katy Perry & Russell BrandOkay so not strictly rock stars but between Russell’s previous lifestyle and Katy’s music, they certainly tick the Sex, Drugs and Rock and Roll boxes. Add both stars’ ability to set fashion trends and you have the perfect fashion-rock duo.

Prior to meeting Russell, Katy had had a bumpy relationship with hip hop star Travis McCoy of Gym Class Heroes, whilst lothario Russell was an admitted sex addict who played the field.

The recovering drug and sex addict comedian and the 'I kissed a girl' singer have been happily married since last October.

Kate Hudson & Matt Belamy (of Muse)
Not to be outshined by the Beckhams, the A-List couple recently announced the arrival of their new baby son Bingham "Bing" Hawn Bellamy. (Yes, you read correctly.) Matt and baby Bingham will now be Hollywood royalty with Kate's parents mum Goldie Hawn and stepdad Kurt Russell.

The new parents got engaged in April following a year-long whirlwind romance.

Kate has a son to previously husband Black Crowes singer Chris Robinson. Since their divorce in 2007, Kate has been romantically linked to a whole host of male stars the one that stuck was (again) a lead singer in a rock band. The role that kick-started her career was that of a rock groupie (sorry, “band-aid”) in Almost Famous.

Alexa Chung and Alex Turner (of Arctic Monkeys). The model-turned-TV presenter had previously been linked with members of The Lost Prophets, The Horrors and Klaxons before hooking up with Arctic Monkeys frontman Alex in 2007.

The ultra-cool couple are often spotted in their natural habitat of music festivals wearing complimentary laid-back chic outfits. Alexa even starred in an Arctic Monkeys music video.

Unfortunately, rumours are abound that the pair have split up. Photographed in May mid a less than enthusiastic kiss, the two haven’t been spotted together since - not even at Glastonbury despite them both being in attendance.

Keira Knightley & James Righton (of Klaxons)

Having split from long-term boyfriend actor Rupert Friend, Keira’s heart seemed to be broken until friend Alexa Chung introduced Kiera to Klaxons keyboarder James.

In just a couple of months the two have been spotted unable to keep their hands off of each other and look set to become the new fashion/indie power couple.

Dinner with Karl

Danny Roberts did this painting as a Thanksgiving gift for blog Fake Karl.

Karl hosts dinner with Kate Moss, Mona Johannesson, Lily Cole and Tanya Dziahileva as his guests (who are aptly clad in Chanel's SS'10 collection).

AnOther decade in fashion.

Kate Moss apparently wasn't satisfied with 4 September covers (W magazine, British Vogue, Russian Vogue and V magazine) so has landed her 5th with AnOther magazine. But - as seems to be in trend at the moment - there are multiple cover alternatives with Vanessa Paradis, Natalie Portman and Katie Holmes also sharing the limelight.
AnOther magazine’s Autumn/Winter '09 issue is marking the end of a decade of style and inside those covers they will explore 28 famous women each dressed in one of 28 designers (who define the decade). Each pairing will encapsulate a unique fashion moment of the Noughties. Can't wait.

Corrine's Kate prints raise funds.

Premier models is auctioning 500 prints of this Corinne Day photograph of Kate Moss - shot in '91 - to raise funds for the photographer who has been battling brain cancer in a clinic in Arizona. Corinne Day is credited with discovering the teenage Kate Moss, and thus initiating the heroin-chic debate in the 90s which coincided with grunge. Day formed a long and close relationships with Kate Moss, resulting in many intimate portraits of the model over the years. Here are some of the earlier works which remind us why Kate Moss became the ultimate supermodel in the early '90s.

Just Cavalli Fall '09

Kate Moss has again features in the latest campaign for Just Cavalli, this time for Fall '09 with younger male models.

George buyers do Balmain.

(Thanks Lauren for the article.)
So I posted some of the Balmain Fall '09 collection last week, including an image of the stunning silver and black mini dress which Kate Moss was spotted wearing back in April.
The dress is of course a tad out of my price range but check out what George at Asda have created for £16. Verdicts? The supermarket is hoping the limited edition dress will be one of their best selling items of the year.

I have a dress I bought years ago in a second hand store which is very in-line with Balmain's latest collection - I think I'll be wearing it next week and will post pics.

As you've never seen Kate before.

Friend of Kate Moss, Swedish designer Lovisa Burfitt has the priviledge of being able to see her friend how nobody else does. She has recently created 3 quirky illustrations of the supermodel dressed as a clown, a court jester and as Charlie Chaplin. The illustrations will appear on jersey dresses sold online at my-wardrobe.com

Buyer for my-wardrobe.com, Joanne Watkinson said "Owning a piece from her collection, and it being limited edition, felt like buying a piece of wearable art. The Kate Moss connection made it even more exciting."

Glastonbury '09.

So Kate Moss was a no-show but there were plenty of other fashionistas strutting their festival gear for the press to feast their camera lenses on. Here model Lily Donaldson sports Kate's normal rocky look with the summers fringing and those all important Ray-bans. Over the last few years, outfits have become a bit formulaic in the reign of Miss Moss but there are always exceptions such as singer VV Brown's colourful ensemble.

Of course the wellies were still the most popular item of clothing despite the lack of rain along with the floral print jersey dresses pushed on the high street.
One of my favourite looks here is one of the simplist: an American Apparel jumpsuit, hippy head band and (my faves) Nike sneakers. Makes a welcome change from the usual uniform.

Celebrity designing gone too far.

Okay, so we had Kate Moss for Topshop, Lily Allen for New Look, Penelope Cruz for Mango etc etc etc. And I can see why some of these "modern style icons" are chosen to "design" or at least inspire their own clothing lines, but the latest one has left me completely dumbfounded.

16 year old Miley Cyrus is to team up with Max Azria (Chairman, Designer and CEO of BCBG Azria Group) to create a junior line of clothing for..... Wal-Mart.
The trend driven collection of graphic t-shirts, bottoms and shoes will be introduced in stores and online in August, and all items will be priced lower than $20.
It makes sense that if Miley was to team up with any one designer, it would be Azria, since he has dressed her for many celebrity events. In fact, both these gorgeous Hervé Léger dresses worn by Miley were designed by Max Azria. But really, how much influence can the 16 year old Cyrus have over the design process?

Kate's latest for Topshop.

One of her best yet, Kate Moss's High Summer collection for Topshop encapsulates the perfect holiday wardrobe for those in the mood for discovering the exotic. Picking up on summer's must-have trends, Kate took inspiration from her own travels for her newest contributaion to the retail giant.

Most of the pieces are the types which, can be dressed up or down depending on the occassion. My favourite item is this exotic little summer dress which, - like a lot of the collection - would look fab with gold chunky jewellery, sandals and a little satchel; equally perfect for wandering Moroccan streets, attending a summer festival or simply going down the street trying to make the most of the British sunshine while it lasts.

Christina to design for Topshop?!

Arcadia tycoon Sir Philip Green has apparently been in talks with Christina Aguilera to design a capsule collection for Topshop which has now hit American shores.

"[Christina] has visited his offices in London and they are thrashing out the details.
"Philip loves her style and believes she would add something new to Topshop. Christina is the blonde bombshell who is into pop whereas Kate is the rock chick and model."

"She'd appeal to a younger shopper than Kate."

But don't worry fans of the Kate Moss collection, it seems that both collections will run alongside each other with Kate just having signed up for another 3 years.

However, just because business savy, multi-billionaire Green seems to get it right when it comes to Topshop, doesn't mean he has fantastic personal style. He was recently spotted(whilst holidaying with Michael Winners & Simon Cowell) wearing a 'Frankie says relax' style t-shirt with his name in it's place!

Marc Jacobs tribute to Stephen Sprouse

Remember the Louis Vuitton graffiti print bags? Remember their leopard print scarfs that could be seen on everyone after their Fall Winter 06 07 collection? Well it was all a result of the collaboration between Creative Director Marc Jacobs and 80s graffiti artist/fashion designer Stephen Sprouse back in 2001.
Sprouse died in 2004 but a few years later Jacobs decided to use a leopard print they had designed together that was never issued. And Jacobs has yet again paid tribute to Sprouse by creating a new collection inspired by their original collaboration. Last week he held a massive tribute event in NYC over 3 different LV locations. Reissued Sprouse LV bags were on display, Debbie Harry did a unique performance and the interiors were completely kitted out in neon lights and graffiti prints.
The highlight of the images for me has to be the exterior of the Wooster Street, Soho store which was covered in a polythene film and then spray painted over. Who else would have the guts to deface a luxury brand but Marc Jacobs?

From the collection itself there are not many things I would buy as I'm not a huge fan of anything too...garish. But I do love the sepia rose print and I can tell the collection is going to be a huge hit so start saving your pennies and get in there fast.

The Rockstar boyfriend accessory.

For decades there has been a distinct relationship between fashion icons and rockstars (think Mick Jagger and Jerry Hall). This year there seems to be a resurgence of the musician man-candy on the arm of the UK's favourite style icons.

Here's a few examples:

Agyness Deyn & Albert Hammond Jr (of the Strokes).
She previously dated Josh Hubbard of the Paddingtons but has now bagged the Strokes guitarist. For Britain's new favourite style icon it is so suitable that she partner up with one of the men who brought indie rock 'n' roll back to the forefront. The 2 being completely down-to-earth, seem very happy and extremely natural despite the constant attention from the press.

Daisy Lowe & Mark Ronson (Musician, Producer & DJ).
Ok so they're not together anymore but for the up and coming model to snatch up Mr Cool himself increased her already celebrity status. Her parents are Pearl Lowe (singer turned fashion designer) and Gavin Rossdale (lead singer of the band Bush and now happily married to Gwen Stefani). Having such parentage, it is understandable that Daisy partnered up with one of the world's best known producers. Unfortunately it didn't last unlike Daisy's model career which has went from strength to strength this year.

Katy Perry & Travis McCoy (of Gym Class Heroes).
The 'I kissed a girl' singer has been dating the hip hop star for over a year and the 2 try to keep their private life exactly that. Recently McCoy was arrested after an incident where a fan insulted him whilst he was performing. Katy has stuck by him and the incident only adds to his, indeed their, rockstar credibility.

Alexa Chung and Alex Turner (of the Arctic Monkeys).
The model turned TV presenter turned model again had previously been linked with a member of the Lost Prophets, the Horrors and the Klaxons before getting together with Arctic Monkeys frontman Alex. The pair have been going out for long over a year and Alexa recently starred in the Arctic Monkeys music video for their song 'My mistakes were made for you'.

Kate Moss & Jamie Hince (of the Kills).
De ja vu. Kate Moss has been romantically linked with a whole host of musicians and has been close friends with Primal Scream lead singer Bobby Gillespie for many years (even dueting in a single with him). Kate has also starred in a White Stripes video.
The supermodel previously had a tumultuous relationship with Pete Doherty but it seemed like her relationship with Jamie Hince was more evenly matched. The couple have had an unsettled relationship however. The cynical part of me thinks that Kate seeks out those who will increase her "indie" cool factor but time will tell if their relationship will survive.

Peaches Geldof & Max Drummey (of band Chester French).
Daughter of Bob Geldof, 19 year old party girl Peaches married American singer Max in Las Vegas in August this year. The married couple have each others names tattooed on their hands. There have been rumours of divorce already but Peaches seems happy enough following her husband on his band's tours.
