Visual Merchandising at Topshop

I regularly get asked for tips when people are going for job interviews as Visual Merchandisers and I find it difficult to always reply because there is literally so much to be said but I've decided to write up the basics.

I have been a visual merchandiser at Topshop, Mango and for Mary Portas' Creative Marketing Agency so my experience is a bit mixed but since I mainly get asked about Topshop, here's a quick guide of some of the basics(I'll probably add to this as time goes on as this was done in haste).

At your interview they will most likely have you do the following 3 things:

1. Style a mannequin to one of the current Topshop trends which they will tell you. STUDY STUDY STUDY the trends on the website 'til you know them off by heart. Go into a Topshop store before the day of your interview and really look at how they have styled the mannequins. You will likely be given a time limit for each task so visit the store before your interview and really look at where the trends are in the store as this will help you save time when it comes to styling them.

2. VM an area. Again they'll give you a trend (different from the previous one) and probably a few empty different types of fixture/rails. They'll give you a bunch of clothes on the rail and again prob give you 20 minutes to sift through the product to select the best product for that trend and style the rails accordingly. The way I always used to try do it would be to style the first rail in a strong colourway, have the second a step away from the previous colour way but perhaps still using one of the main colours from the first and have the third a different colourway altogether but again perhaps using one of the key colours from the second. I'll give you an example:

Fixture 1 - BrightPink SeaGreen Black White
Fixture 2 - BrightPink DarkBlue Black Cream
Fixture 3 - PalePink Cream Black

So basically keep strong colours together. e.g. Cream and White should be kept seperate. In this case, even though there might be 2 pinks in the trend, since one is BrightPink and the other is Pale, they are kept to seperate fixtures.

On one arm, try to think about an outfit build. The product at the front (in customer's eye line) should be a key trend piece so say it was a dress, you might want to add leggings or a jacket behind it but always be aware of everything a customer sees in their key line of vision should look great. ie. don't put plain black leggings at the front of a rail.

You'll also be expected to add accessories to these rails. Keep it simple but add at least one prong arm to each fixture.

Colour balance is one of the key things to remember, don't over saturate a colour. Spread it around the fixture (or wall) so that from all angles the trend looks strong.

3. Interview. Topshop mainly look for 2 things in their employees: People who have personality and people who've got the customer in mind. Let your personality come out. If you are creative, let them know that but always bear in mind that the aim is to create a great customer experience and help them see how the trend translates into something wearable for them (and therefore commercial for the store). In Topshop they regularly look at key products performance to make sure they put these products in key sightlines for the customer. Be cheery and happy and keen to learn and show what you can do and they'll love you.

Dress Me Up!

Topshop's Oxford Circus never ceases to amaze me.

Throughout December, their 'Dress Me Up!' section plays hosts to an amazing selection of dresses donated by fashion’s elite. From a Burberry dress donated by Freida Pinto and Jourdan Dunn's stunning Herve Leger, to Peaches Geldoff's Dolce & Gabbanna and a dress designed and worn by Naomi Campbell; the idea is that you can go along and hire one of the stunning pieces for the evening for just £40! (All proceeds go to charity).

Christmas window displays

Set designer Shona Heath designed Topshop's Christmas window displays and they look fabulous.
I have to say that now that I work for MANGO, my eyes have been opened up to visual merchandising techniques outwith the Topshop way of doing things. Both styles are great but very different. Topshop is very much suited for a UK creative audience whereas Mango - being a Spanish company - have a much more European, mature appeal.
Here's our shop window Christmas display complete with Christmas trees, fairy lights and snowflake stickers. Prior to this, we had a very Chanel-like display with over-sized chandeliers. I was fortunate enough to be able to takes some of these chandeliers home with me once they were done with them.

Lace

I have mentioned my fondness for lace on many-an-occasion. I love the delicacy and fragility of lace, which nowadays is toughened up with the items it is worn with. I have collected quite a few lace garments over the last couple of years but there's always room for more. Here are some items I've recently been eyeing up:
My appreciation of lace however, also stems from the booming industry my home town was famous for. For such a small town, Darvel established a large lace-making reputation throughout Scotland and our lace was exported all over the world from the handful of factories. Unfortunately, over the last couple of decades, cheaper foreign production has wiped out the industry and only one of the factories stands intact with its looms but completely dorment.

NYLON style sight

Apparently NYLON knows a good thing when they see it. It seems that when Christopher Kane did his masters degree at Central St. Martin's college, NYLON were so impressed that they photographed  him and his work for their September '06 issue.
Not only this, but 4 years ago in their STREET book of style published, a 19 year old Robert Pattinson - then an unknown actor - was snapped in the streets of London.

Yup, the Scrunchie is back.

It's official. I posted at the start of July about American Apparel bringing back the scrunchie. But now that it has hit Topshop shop floors, Carrie Bradshaw must be eating her words.

Neurotica at Topshop

The London indie label Neurotica is set to follow in the footsteps of Mario Schwab thanks to fashion retail giant Topshop. Their gothic prints will be coming to Britain's high streets in just over a week and will be in good company alongside lines by Jonathan Saunders, Emma Cook and Christopher Kane to name a few.

Emma Cook for Topshop

Topshop's Inside Out blog had access to Emma Cook's studio and shows her working on the prints which have just been revealed in her new collection for the brand. I love seeing designers' work space.

Topshop New Season

On my recent visit to London, I of course swung by Topshop Oxford Street. Launching their New Season's collection, the store had everything (and I mean everything) that we can come to expect from Fall '09.
Shaggy knits, exciting hosiery, lace and sheer fabrics, glam embroidery, oversized bullet proof statement jewellery, thigh high boots, bondage shoes... and this was all just in the window display! Topshop has hit the nail on the head yet again.

Topshop sells Choolips.

This summer, CHOOLIPS’ fairtrade summer dresses - playful, pretty silhouettes featuring colourful Ghanaian batik prints - will be sold exclusively at Topshop’s Oxford Circus flagship store.

The label offers garments made in Ghana by local batikers, tailors and seamstresses, all of whom earn eleven times the average national wage for their work.

Celeberama!

The fashion retail industry has went celebrity daft! I'm not even going to go into details... Here are some of the more recent partnerships I can think of off hand:

(the latest rumour) Amy Winehouse for PPQ.
Beth Ditto for Evans.
Barbara Hulanicki (of Biba fame) for Topshop.
Yasmin le Bon for Wallis.
Miley Cyrus & Max Azria for Walmart.
Henry Holland for Topman.
Taylor Swift for Walmart.

I'm sure there will be a lot more in the pipe-line.

Celebrity designing gone too far.

Okay, so we had Kate Moss for Topshop, Lily Allen for New Look, Penelope Cruz for Mango etc etc etc. And I can see why some of these "modern style icons" are chosen to "design" or at least inspire their own clothing lines, but the latest one has left me completely dumbfounded.

16 year old Miley Cyrus is to team up with Max Azria (Chairman, Designer and CEO of BCBG Azria Group) to create a junior line of clothing for..... Wal-Mart.
The trend driven collection of graphic t-shirts, bottoms and shoes will be introduced in stores and online in August, and all items will be priced lower than $20.
It makes sense that if Miley was to team up with any one designer, it would be Azria, since he has dressed her for many celebrity events. In fact, both these gorgeous Hervé Léger dresses worn by Miley were designed by Max Azria. But really, how much influence can the 16 year old Cyrus have over the design process?

Kate's latest for Topshop.

One of her best yet, Kate Moss's High Summer collection for Topshop encapsulates the perfect holiday wardrobe for those in the mood for discovering the exotic. Picking up on summer's must-have trends, Kate took inspiration from her own travels for her newest contributaion to the retail giant.

Most of the pieces are the types which, can be dressed up or down depending on the occassion. My favourite item is this exotic little summer dress which, - like a lot of the collection - would look fab with gold chunky jewellery, sandals and a little satchel; equally perfect for wandering Moroccan streets, attending a summer festival or simply going down the street trying to make the most of the British sunshine while it lasts.
